Supported Living Coaching

Supported Living Coaching is for an adult with a disability who lives in their own home or apartment, or wants to, and needs somebody teaching and backing them up while they learn how.

It is coaching, not caretaking. The goal is that they need us less over time, not more.

The home has to be theirs

One thing worth knowing before you start. Florida requires that the person receiving Supported Living Coaching holds their own lease or mortgage, and the home cannot be owned by the coaching provider or by family. So the home is theirs, in their name, and we come to it. We will help them find a place, deal with the landlord and understand what they are signing, and we will say plainly if a place is not going to work.

What a coach actually helps with

• Paying rent and bills on time, and keeping track of money
• Shopping, cooking and keeping the kitchen safe
• Cleaning, laundry and looking after the place
• Medication reminders and getting to appointments
• Dealing with a landlord, a neighbor, or a problem that comes up
• Knowing who to call and what to do when something goes wrong

A note for parents

This is often the hardest service for a family to say yes to, because it means stepping back. Most parents we work with are not worried about whether their son or daughter can learn. They are worried about what happens at 2:00 AM when something goes wrong and they are not there. That is a fair worry, and it is why somebody answers our phone around the clock.

Where we serve

Mirrah Image Services supports families across Lake, Orange, Sumter and Marion counties, including Leesburg, Eustis, Tavares, Mount Dora, Fruitland Park and the surrounding towns.

How it is paid for

This is a Florida Medicaid Waiver service, funded through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. If your loved one is not on the waiver yet, start with our plain words guide to the APD waiting list, or come to our free application class. If you do not qualify for the waiver and paying privately is a genuine hardship, ask us about hardship assistance.
