Companion Services

We Reflect What You See.

Companion Services is about having a life outside the house. A companion goes with your loved one into the community and does ordinary things alongside them, the way a friend would.

It is the service families underestimate and the one that changes people the most. Loneliness does real damage, and a lot of adults with disabilities are very lonely.

What a day might be

• The park, the library, a ball game, a walk around the lake
• Shopping, lunch out, a haircut, a church service
• A class, a club, a volunteer shift, a hobby they have never been able to get to
• Just company, conversation, and somebody who is glad to see them

Who it is for

Companion Services is for adults aged 21 and over. Florida calls it Life Skills Development 1, so you may see that name on a support plan or a bill. It is one companion with one person, or a small group of no more than three, and it always happens out in the community rather than in a staff member's own home.

What it is not

It is not babysitting and it is not supervision for its own sake. The point is that the person has a week worth looking forward to.

Where we serve

Mirrah Image Services supports families across Lake, Orange, Sumter and Marion counties, including Leesburg, Eustis, Tavares, Mount Dora, Fruitland Park and the surrounding towns.

How it is paid for

This is a Florida Medicaid Waiver service, funded through the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. If your loved one is not on the waiver yet, start with our plain words guide to the APD waiting list, or come to our free application class. If you do not qualify for the waiver and paying privately is a genuine hardship, ask us about hardship assistance.
